Fitrana is a Fard-e- Kafaya . Fard-e-Kafaya is a duty that is made obligatory for the whole Muslim Umma. Why? The following Ahadith explains it clearly,

Ibn `Abbas (R.A) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (SAW.W) ordained Zakat ul Fitr [Fitrana] to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer, but it is a mere Sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer. ”

This hadith clarifies that it is a must for every Muslim man and woman, rich and poor who are fasting as this amount acts to forgive the wrong deeds that happened unintentionally during fasting.

How to Calculate the Zakat ul Fitar?

Now let’s help you know how much zakat ul fitar is recommended and how to calculate. As per the teachings of Islam,

“The Prophet (SAW) said you should give one saa’ of food for Zakat Al-Fitra. One saa’ is the same as four madd. A madd is the amount you can hold in your hands together. If we talk about money, you can give the price of one saa’ worth of basic food like flour, rice, dates, etc.

Now let’s not confuse you and clearly explain that one Saa’ is equal to 3 kg of staple food.

For instance, if you want to pay your Zakat ul Fitr on Wheat, you must donate 3 kg of wheat per person or the money that can be used to buy three kg of wheat.

Remember this 3kg of wheat or its amount will be from one individual. However, if there are multiple individuals in a family, everyone is bound to pay the same amount.

Like 1 person Fitrana = 3kg of Wheat.

4 person Fitrana will be = 3 x 4 = 12kg wheat or its equivalent amount
